In 1946, Kansas City native and bebop jazz pioneer Charlie "Yardbird" Parker composed Ornithology. This revolutionary tune went on to define a genre, elevating Kansas City as a musical epicenter, and inspiring generations of artists, musical and otherwise, for years to come. Fast forward to 2022, when contemporary artist Willie Cole made the historic Boone Theatre, located in the KC jazz district, his studio. There, inspired by Parker’s legacy, and with the support of Mike “the Horn Doctor” Corrigan of BAC Musical instruments, Cole brought Ornithology to life in a breathtaking installation for the new Kansas City International Airport. This striking work, consisting of twelve birds crafted from 144 alto saxophones—Parker’s instrument of choice—pays tribute to the city’s enduring creativity and collaborative spirit.
Now, you can bring a piece of that legacy into your own home with the KC Jazzbird. This thoughtfully crafted, miniaturized excerpt from the Ornithology installation comes in two sizes: an elegant 14” wingspan presentation piece and a charming 7” ornament size.
